History of American football 🏈

The history of American football in its early days is linked to the history of rugby.  Both games
originate from a type of football sport that was common in the UK during the mid-19th century, generally intended to send the ball directly into the net using foot
. or running to cross a line

American football has emerged as a result of many changes in rugby, particularly those made by Walter Camp (aka "Father of American Football") to the rules of the game

These changes primarily involve the introduction of the so-called engagement line as well as the testing system.  American football has become more popular as a college game (American University Football), becoming one of the most dominant sports of the first half of the 20th  century

The origin of professional football dates back to 1892, when William Hefelfinger signed a $ 500 contract to play for Allegheny Sports Club against Pittsburgh Sports Club.  By 1920, the American Professional Football Association was finally formed

Two years later it was renamed to what is now called the National Football League (NFL), which is the main league of American football.  Initially, the sport first gained popularity in the industrial cities of the US Midwest, becoming a national phenomenon

The final match of the 1958 tournament is likely to play an important role in its growing popularity, with many categorizing it as the “Greatest Game Ever Played”

By contrast, in 1960, the American Football League (AFL), the rival league to the NFL, began in the United States.  At NFL and the winner of AFL, the latter is the most watched television event across the United States.

Walter Camp 🏈

(father of American football)

Walter Camp is widely recognized as the most important figure in the history of American football development.

Walter Camp «Father of American Football»,
During his youth, Walter Camp excelled in a number of mathematics, such as athletics, baseball and football.  After enrolling at Yale in 1876, Camp received a registration in all sports offered by the University.

Kamp regularly went to the Masasuite House, where discussions were held to unify and change the rules.  He proposed changing the first rule at his first meeting in 1878: reducing the number of players from fifteen to eleven.  The proposal was rejected at the time, but finally passed in 1880. The goal of this change was to free the floor and focus on speed rather than force.  The most notable changes that Camp caused were the creation of the line of participation or the "line of deception": in addition to returning the ball (surprise) from the center to the second quarter line in 1880. Other changes later included the introduction of the possibility of picking up the ball using hands, either  From the air or by passing it directly from one hand to another.

Instead of increasing the number of goals, the original Camp Design goal, to use the rules to maintain control of the ball during all phases of the game, what gave the interviews slow, without a goal.  At the 1882 conference, Camp suggested that each team had to push the ball at least five yards in three attempts or less.  The new rules, along with the creation of the line of engagement, have transformed the game from just a game with simple differences from rugby or football to a separate sport: American football

Camp participated in other more important changes, which eventually led to the identification and organization of American football.  In 1881, the size of the stadium was reduced to its modern dimensions of 120 yards in length and 53 yards in width (109.7 on 48.8 meters).  In 1883, Camp made several adjustments to the drip system, eventually becoming four points for landing, two points for a goal after landing, and five points for a field goal.

By 1887, the duration of the game had been changed to two parts, each with 45 minutes.  During the same year, it was decided that each match would be run by two refereeers with different functions.  A year later, new rules were introduced, and in 1889 the whistles and the chronometer were given to the rulers

After leaving Bell in 1882, Camp worked in the New Haven Clock Company until his death in 1925

Although he was no longer a player, Camp continued to attend a number of conferences throughout his lifetime. In parallel, however, Camp personally chose the All-American team from 1898 to 1924. After his death, the Walter Camp Football Foundation continues to select these teams in honor.  for him.

  (Expansion (1880-1904 🏈

University football has been very popular during the last two decades of the 19th century

In 1880, the number of participating universities did not exceed eight, but by 1900 that number had risen to forty-three.
In 1879, the University of Michigan became the first university in western Pennsylvania to have an American football team

It was later followed by other Midwestern universities, including the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Minnesota.

The first national football association, the Inter-University Conference of Kyat Representatives (or the Western Conference), was established in 1895 as a prelude to the Big Ten Conference.

Thanks to the leadership of legendary Fielding Joost, the University of Michigan team has become a force in the game and has won many victories.  Between 1901 and 1905 he played a series of fifty-six unbeaten games, including the first off-season match, Rose Paul (an annual tradition held on January 1, with some exceptions: if New Year's Day is Sunday, passers are introduced  Until Monday, January 2).  In this series of victories, Michigan got 2831 points, while their opponents got only 40.

Another legendary coach is Amos Alonzo Stag of the University of Chicago, who spent most of his career in the West Association.  He first worked at the Springfield International School of Training, then in Chicago, and then at the University of the Pacific, for 55 years

Alonso Stag was ranked in 2007 as the seventh most successful coach, with a total of 314 victories.

  (Controversy (1905 🏈

Starting from its early days as a mass rallying game, American football is classified as a violent sport that has long been associated with injuries.  The 1894 Harvard Yale match, for example, known as the Hampton Park Bloodbath, caused severe injuries to four players; it halted matches for nearly three years until 1897

The annual Army-Navy match between 1894 and 1898 was suspended.  For similar reasons

The resulting collisions often lead to serious injuries, and sometimes even death.

Violence reached its limits in 1905 when there were nineteen deaths across the country.

That prompted US President Theodore Roosevelt to step in, threatening to ban the game if radical changes were not made.  Changing the year 1906, intended to open the game and reduce injuries, it was legitimized and passed forward.  Although this change was not fully utilized during the early years, it was a milestone in the history of the rules of the game that contributed to the consolidation of the foundations of the modern game.

On December 28, 1905, representatives of 62 universities met in New York to discuss changes in the rules of the game.  As a result of this meeting they form what is now known as the National Association of University Sports.

(From Regional to National (1930-1958 🏈

The university game continued to grow during the 1930s, particularly in the southern United States, contributed to fierce competition for the region, such as the "oldest competition in the deep South" between the Universities of Georgia and Auburn.

Although most of the national forces in the game before the 1920s were descended from the Northeast or Midwest of the United States, this fact quickly changed over time as the Southern teams began to achieve national successes.  The University of Alabama team won the Rose Bowl run by Governor Wallace Wade in 1926, and won his first national title.

The Georgia Tech Institute team also beat the University of California in the 1929 Rose Bowl interview. University football quickly became the most popular sport in the American South.

  (Modern University Football (1958 🏈

After the huge television success of the championship match of the NFL in 1958, college football is no longer as popular as the NFL, at least nationally.

Although both games benefit from the same television appearances as of the late 1950s, the National Football League is widely popular nationwide while university football has maintained strong regional ties.
